Detectives of the Nigeria Police attached to Niger State Police Command have arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), ASC Idris Saidu, over his involvement in illegal dealings in arms and ammunition.
The detectives recovered two AK-47 rifles and several rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
According to the police, the 33-years old hails from Maje Village, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State and was serving at the NSCDC Headquarters, Minna, until he was arrested at Fadikpe Area of Chachanga Local Government of Niger State following a tip-off from a patriotic Nigerian.
In his statement to the Police, Saidu confessed that he bought the arms and ammunition as part of his personal contribution to his maternal community which is presently engaged in communal crisis with the Fulanis in Taraba State.
The police said the suspect has given useful information that will lead to the arrest of his accomplices. He would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation into the case is completed, the police authority assured.
Commending the whistleblower who volunteered information leading to Saidu’s arrest, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, enjoined other citizens to emulate the patriotic act and support the security forces with credible information in their effort at making Nigeria safer for all.
