The Lagos State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has called off its six weeks old industrial action and has expressed their decision to resume work.

The lecturers had been on strike since 20th May but in a letter to the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, signed by the school’s ASUU Chairman, Dr. Kunle Idris, they said they had met and that the decision to call of the strike was taken on Monday.

According to the letter, the Congress of ASUU LASU met “and reviewed the strike action it embarked upon on 20th May 2014 and After exhaustive deliberation on the Governing Council’s letter ref: LASU/PRO-CHAN/ASUU/31 of 11th July 2014, the congress took some decisions.

“The congress suspended the strike action but resolved that discussions on the outstanding issues identified by members should be continued by the executive members,” Idris said.

“Congress believes that the letters and spirit of the Resolutions reached with the University Administration and the University Appointments and Promotions (Acad) Committee; and of the Governing Council shall hold.”

The union said the letter, therefore, served as a notice to the Governing Council and the University administration “that the Academic Staff of LASU has effective from 1500 hours, Monday, July 14, 2014 resumed the teaching aspect of their duties.”

The lecturers had embarked on the strike action to press home some demands including welfare of staff, reduction of the school fees of the students among others.
