The Ekiti Youth Emancipation Movement (EYEM) has expressed disappointment about the attitude of President Goodluck Jonathan to governance, describing it as placing more premiums on politics than the lives of defenceless Nigerians.

Observing that the president has not been aboard in the discharge of his constitutional duty of providing security for Nigerians, EYEM stated that politics and second term ambition are the two most important self-imposed duties the president has taken upon himself.

The Ekiti political pressure group wondered how any compassionate leader could abandon over 200 kidnapped schoolgirls for political merry-making in the name of campaign in Ekiti State.

EYEM’s statement, signed by its president, Mr. Taiwo Olatunji; secretary, Mr. Kunle Adewumi; and Public Relations Officer, Miss Taiwo Ajayi, was in response to the proposed visit of President Jonathan to Ekiti State on Thursday, 22nd May to present the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Ayo Fayose, to party members.

The group wondered how the same president who cancelled a visit to Chibok in Borno State where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted could turn around and head to Ekiti for politicking.

Describing it as executive recklessness and leadership betrayal, EYEM said, “ though unbelievable,  it was however true that leaders of other countries had shown more seriousness and compassion about the Chibok disaster than Jonathan who is supposed to be most affected. While the President is running away from Chibok for fear of attack from Boko Haram and his own soldiers who are demoralised, he is coming to Ekiti to raise the hands of a candidate who represents everything but peace.”

The group added that it was more insulting and disappointing that the president was coming to Ekiti to sell a bad product who has been roundly rejected by all, save for a few who are interested in the peanuts he promised to dole out.

“The Ekiti Youth Emancipation Movement (EYEM) is hereby calling on Mr. President and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt their alleged plan to rig the Ekiti State governorship election in favour of PDP. It is true that the PDP governorship primaries was rigged in favour of the gangsterish Fayose, but Ekiti people are not the same thing as PDP, where illegality is the language and violence the accepted norm. We in EYEM are prepared to join forces with other political parties in Ekiti State to make sure that the presidency and the PDP do not carry out their characteristic illegality in Ekiti State,” EYEM said.

“It is a known fact that part of the strategy of the PDP is to accuse others of the evil it is planning. This is to divert attention from its devilish plot. It is an indisputable fact that the PDP holds the best record in Ekiti State and Nigeria at large as far as election rigging is concerned.”

EYEM called on civil societies, Ekiti elites, professional bodies, traditional rulers and all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on Jonathan and his party, PDP, to allow free, fair and credible gubernatorial election in Ekiti State.

“If there’s breakdown of law and order before, during and after the election due to federal might, the presidency and the PDP should be held responsible. Election riggers may not go scot free”
