The Federal Capital Territory administration has denied the abduction tale that was rife in some sections of the media on Tuesday
There was panic among residents of Nyanya, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital when they learnt that gunmen invaded a school in the area and successfully abducted some children. This resulted in mass confusion forcing many parents to storm the various schools to retrieve their wards.
Explaining what actually happened, the authorities, through the FCT Secretary of Education, Mallam Kabir Usman, said that at about 7am on Tuesday, some armed men snatched one of the school buses of Divine International Academy, Nyanya.
According to the explanation, all the children had disembarked and were safely in the school premises at the time the incident occurred.
The snatched bus was later recovered at Lafia, Nasarawa state with the two men found in the bus promptly arrested by security agencies.
Usman said security agencies were immediately contacted and the school premises were secured after the incident while security was beefed up in other schools.
He urged residents of the FCT to remain calm and vigilant saying the Administration will continue to ensure the security of lives and property.
Following the scare, a contingent of soldiers, anti-terrorism policemen and other security operatives were deployed to schools and other public areas of Nyanya.
