President Goodluck Jonathan is currently holding an expanded meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) with state governors, heads of the various security agencies and para-military organisations.

The meeting commenced around 12 noon on Thursday, with President of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Nigeria and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar and the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor also in attendance.

Jonathan convened the meeting following the recent sharp increase in the spate of terrorism in the country, especially the bombing in Nyanya, Abuja − which killed over 79 people while several more sustained severe injuries ─ and the abduction of over 120 female students from Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Chibok, Borno State.

Governors of Rivers State, Jigawa State, Edo State, and Ogun State were represented by their deputies. No representative of Lagos State has been seen as at the time of this report.     

Ministers in attendance are: Abba Moro of  Interior; Gen. Aliyu Gusau Defence; Abduljelil Adesiyan Police Affairs, Viola Onwuleri,  Foreign Affairs, Akinwunmi Adeshina Agriculture and the  Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke.

The Security chiefs in attendance are; the Chiefs of Army, Navy and  Airforce, as well as the Inspector General of Police, the Comptrollers General of Customs and  Immigration, Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Commandant General of the  Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp.
