Barely 72 hours after the bomb explosion that rocked  the ever busy Nyanya Mass Transit Bus Park and claimed scores of lives , FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, has constituted a special committee to reconstruct, upgrade, or relocate the park to enhance security and free flow of traffic in the area.

The Minister directed the committee to commence work immediately notwithstanding the public holidays.

According to him all hands should be on deck to ensure that normalcy returns to Nyanya as quickly as possible.

In a statement issued by Nosike Ogbuenyi, Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed constituted the committee during an emergency security meeting which he summoned to review security situation in the FCT and deliberate on the way forward. 

He also directed the Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company (AUMTCO) to deploy more mass transit luxury buses to the routes to fill the gap created by the buses damaged by the bomb blast.

The Committee on the reconstruction and upgrading of the Nyanya Park, comprises members drawn from the Urban and Regional Planning Department of FCT, Land Department, AGIS, and the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Apart from the mandate to work out modalities for reconstructing the park, the Committee is to explore the possibility of relocating the park to a better place to ease observed traffic bottlenecks. He said the reconstructed park would have necessary security features.

The Minister appealed for the understanding of commuters and motorists using the Mararaba – Nyanya – AYA road, and asked them to bear with the authorities as efforts are being made to upgrade the Nyanya Park and improve security and traffic flow.

Mr. Mohammed gave directives for enhanced security in usually crowded public places including other motor parks in the FCT.In matters of security everybody is a stakeholder and therefore security is everybody’s business. He said.

At the meeting, a minute silence was observed in honour of victims of the Nyanya bomb blast. 

.Those present at the meeting apart from the FCT Minister include the FCT Minister of State, Olajumoke Akinjide; the Permanent Secretary of FCT, John Chukwu; the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Mohammed Yau Gital; the chairmen of the six area councils in FCT; the FCT Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu; and the Director of State Security Services in FCT, John Okojie.

Also present were the Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Reuben Okoya; the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Aminu Kofarsoro; the FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Susan Ada Ajenge; the Director FCT Road Traffic Services, Aminu Iro; representative of Nigeria Immigration Services; the Special Adviser on Security to the FCT Minister, Abdullahi Kudu; the Chairman of FCT Council of Chiefs, the Ona of Abaji; and several others.
