Vigilant security personnel at the Lion Building of the Enugu State Government House on Saturday repelled an attack by unknown thugs who struck very early in the morning.
One of the thugs was shot dead while three others were arrested. Witnesses said the tragedy would have been worse, were the assailants in possession of guns.
A government source linked the thugs to a leading politician in the state, saying the invasion might not be unconnected with the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party to allow politicians into the party.
“The attack occurred at about 4.30 am when a group of young men numbering about 50 and carrying machetes and cutlasses invaded the Government House and tried to force their way in”, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chukwudi Achife said.
“The attackers were immediately engaged by the security personnel who shot dead one person and arrested three. One security man was injured in the attack”.
He also confirmed that the Enugu State Police Command has begun investigations into the arrest and the weapons recovered from the thugs.
Spokesman of the Police Ebere Amaraizu also confirmed it, saying it would be investigated.
