Hearing on the contempt of court charge filed by human rights lawyer, Chief Femi Falana (SAN) against Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar could not go on as planned today owing to the absence of Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Justice Ibrahim Auta.

Falana had filed the contempt of court charge (Form 49) against Mohammed Abubakar, accusing the IG of persistently disobeying court orders as well as the judgments of three Abuja High Courts.

In his submission, he said the judgments of the courts barred the Police from interfering with the activities of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN). Falana alleged that the IG refused to lift the ban placed by the Police on the operations of the Peace Corps, as ordered by the court as far back as 2009.

The court proceeding was earlier adjourned on 21st January, as Auta attended a meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC). This time around, it has now been adjourned to 7th April 2014.

While issuing the contempt of court summons against the IG, Auta had demanded him to appear before the court on 21st January or risk imprisonment. But when he himself didn’t show up in court, the court registrar and counsel to the parties in the case fixed 27th February for the hearing.
