Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon on Wednesday condemned Tuesday’s massacre of students of the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe by gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram islamist sect.
Speaking via a statement issued in New York, Ki-Moon condoled with families of the victims and expressed hope that the masterminds would be apprehended and punished.
“The secretary-general is deeply concerned about the increasing frequency and brutality of attacks against educational institutions in the north of the country. He reiterates that no objective can justify such violence,” a part of the statement read.
Also on Wednesday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) described the attacks, as extremely gory even by the scorched-earth tactics of the terrorists, plumbing the depth of horror.
“What a sad day for Nigeria and indeed for all of humanity, when innocent school children were used as soft targets by a group of cowardly terrorists, who have shed their toga of humanity on the altar of a meaningless ideology”, Interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed wrote In a statement issued in Lagos.
“We condole with the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Yobe State over this abominable crime. We urge the state and federal government to work together to ensure that schools in the state are adequately protected”.
APC called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately visit the state to offer succour to the families of the victims and the state government, saying that is the least the Federal Government can do to help soothe the pains of those involved.
The party urged the president to also use the opportunity to visit Borno, which has been reeling under ceaseless and deadly attacks from the terrorists, as well as to the brave and patriotic soldiers who have been putting their all into the battle against these insurgents.
“A visit from Mr. President will be a morale booster for our troops in battle, and will also show the beleaguered people of the affected states that they have not been abandoned to their cruel fate by the federal government as well as their compatriots”.
