Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has implored Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and other members of staff to be more vigilant and cautious as preparations for the 2015 general election intensify.
An INEC daily bulletin issued by the commission’s deputy director (publicity), Mr. Nick Dazang, quoted Jega as rendering the advice while addressing the RECs and staff of the commission during the just concluded INEC retreat in Kaduna.
“All eyes are on us, our friends, partners, concerned citizens, and indeed, even our adversaries”, Jega said. “We must be more vigilant, be more committed and strengthen our harmony at all levels to achieve the desired results”.
According to the bulletin stated, he urged management and staff to go about their responsibilities with the heist-possible standards of integrity, impartiality and non-partisanship.
“In reviewing INEC’s sundry programmes and plans to be implemented this year, it is evident that there will be gaps”, he added, further advising participants at the retreat to ensure that those gaps are filled and that fundamental obligations are fulfilled.
At the retreat, where INEC released the timetables for the Osun and Ekiti governorship elections as well as the 2015 general elections, Jega also promised that INEC would improve on its existing competencies while giving positions of responsibilities to staff who have demonstrated the capacity to perform in the face of challenges.
