Six people, including an orderly to Senator Gbenga Obadara, have sustained gun injuries in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of the Ogun State, after members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) disrupted a senatorial meeting by a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with gunshots.

According to Senator Gbenga Obadara, the senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, and member of the Federal House of Representatives member, Hon. Adekunle Adeyemi, the meeting was held to sensitise members of the senatorial district on the forthcoming registration exercise of the party.

Adeyemi accused the Ogun State Police Command of negligence of duty, saying the Police did not do enough to curtail the raid.

Governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun condemned the attack and descrived it as shocking.

“The news of the alleged attack was shocking to me. All the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as chairmen of our local councils were in Lagos to celebrate Baba Bisi Akande”, Amosun said in a release issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Sola Balogun.

“It is even more curious that some chieftains of our party would choose a time to honour our revered leader for another meeting. The motive is certainly questionable”.

But in its own response, the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the incident as barbaric and uncalled-for, and blaming it on lack of vision by the APC leadership.

A statement signed by Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, Jerry Needam, observed that militarization of party politics has become the tradition of the APC in the absence of grassroots support, stressing that it is the same desperation to force itself on the people that is responsible for the crisis in Rivers State.

PDP urged all Nigerians everywhere not to submit to the outdated politics of coercion as being introduced by the APC, calling on law enforcement agents to investigate the Ogun crisis and ensure the culprits are fished out and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
