The Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) is warning Nigerians to be on high alert after the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) issued an order advising the faceless group, which identifies itself as the Nigerian Online Publishers Association (NOPA); to desist from conducting any activities in the name of Nigerian online publishers, as it amounts to impersonation and astroturfing.

But the CAC correspondence addressed to NOPA was returned with a cancelled address, indicating the person or group of persons purporting to represent Nigerian online publishers are hiding their true identities and violating Nigerian laws against false advertising and engaging in illegal and deceptive business practices, with a view to bamboozling the unsuspecting public to get sucked into patronizing phony online websites.

In the CAC letter Ref No: COM/NSC/01/ VOL.5/2013/5 dated December 5, 2013, CAC drew the attention of NOPA to the fact that Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) was registered on November 14, 2011, while the Nigerian Online Publishers Association (NOPA) was incorporated on October 2, 2013. “it is clear from the foregoing that the registration of your organization under the name Nigerian Online Publishers Association must have been done in error,” noted the statement that was signed by Jiddah Hauwa Kabir for the Registrar General.

The CAC missive directed NOPA or whoever is behind the phony organization to change its name within six weeks of the date of issuance of the letter, failure to which the Commission will be left with no other choice but to ensure and enforce compliance with the directive; a copy of which was copied to OPAN through its attorney, C. K. James Esq. of Lawworks & Partners law firm.
