Three days after his arrest, leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has being freed by Benin Republic gendarmes.

Yet, no allegations were reported against him, according to his lawyer, Barrister Festus Keyamo, who spoke with Huhuonline.comon phone Thursday afternoon.

Keyamo did not give details of Dokubo-Asari’s travails and release, but he had sent a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, asking the president to assist in securing the release of his client.

In the letter, Keyamo claimed that Mujahid Dokubo-Asari was unjustly arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, around the hours of 1:00pm and 2:00pm by the country’s gendarmes (Police Force).

According to the letter, he was picked up around the Lubeleyi roundabout and taken to an unknown destination.

“We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari, even though a Nigerian, carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country. All these places have been searched and nothing incriminating was found”, Keyamo had lamented in the letter.

“We think his arrest and detention is a ploy by certain forces in Nigeria in unholy alliance with the Beninoise government to keep him away as 2015 approaches. We call on you to use your good office to immediately intervene and ensure that no harm befalls Alhaji Dokubo-Asari and to use all diplomatic means to secure his immediate release and safe return to Nigeria”.

He did not say if President Goodluck Jonathan was instrumental to Dokubo-Asari’s release.
