The United States of America has rekindled its interest in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, being the economic nerve centre of the country.

Speaking during a one-day official visit to Bayelsa State, U.S. Consular General, Mr. Jeffrey Hawkins stated the readiness of his country to rev up its focus on the region but conceded that this would be impossible without the support of Governor of the state, Hon. Seriake Dickson.

“As we move closer to the big show in 2015, that is the general elections, we definitely want to be in touch with you. The United States is really studying to focus on the Niger Delta again in a lot of ways that will be very positive”, said Hawkins, who was visiting Bayelsa for the second time in his tenure.

“I really want to get your advice on our engagements in the Niger Delta on our efforts to support what government is doing. We are very interested in supporting a dialogue between the people of this region who are so important for the future of this Country and the leadership of the region.”

In his response, Governor Seriake Dickson expressed his administration’s preparedness to partner with the United States in the areas of security, environment and other issues militating against the development of the state.

Praising the efforts of the United States in re-establishing and deepening its bilateral relationship with Nigeria, Dickson recalled the reception of a business delegation from the state of Houston in the United States and said he looked forward to a more mutually beneficial relationship with the US.

“Last month, I was in your country, as a member of the Board of the Lincoln University and I am in the process of selecting some of our students that will be scholars there by January next year. Going forward, I look forward to a very robust and mutually beneficial relationship”, he said.
