The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has deleted 8,000 names from the 2011 voter register in Gombe State as a result of multiple registration.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Professor Istifanus Dafwang disclosed this on Thursday to members of the Gombe State House of Assembly.

According to Dafwang, INEC, as promised, has been able to successfully work against multiple registration.

He disclosed that the de-registration was made possible through the Automated Finger Print Identification System (AFIS), a screening system procured by the electoral body to detect multiple registration.

He appealed to the lawmakers to sensitise their constituents against multiple registration, as it would only be a waste of time and effort, and could incur sanctions.

He also cautioned against electoral malpractices, urging politicians to accept defeats where elections are deemed free and fair, adding that sensitisation by INEC would be carried out in all the local government councils in the state as well as through traditional rulers.

In his reaction, Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Inuwa Garba, who commended INEC for its efforts to sanitise the electoral space, promised on behalf of the lawmakers to begin a campaign against electoral malpractices in the state.
