Former Nigeria President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday met with five of the seven governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are members of the breakaway faction of the party..

Two governors, Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State and Aliyu Wammako of Sokoto State, were absent. But five others — Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, Babangida Aliyu of Niger State,  Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State,  Sule Lamido of Jigawa, and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State — were all in attendance.

Journalists were prevented from covering the meeting, which lasted about two hours. But after it ended, Aliyu addressed newsmen saying the governors had come to consult with Obasanjo over the lingering crisis in the party.

He also addressed reports that the governors were planning to defect to another political party, dismissing the reports as mere speculations.

“We have been having many meetings with President Goodluck Jonathan, and the crisis would soon be resolved,” he said.

“You may recall that when the issues started, we consulted with some of our elders. This is part of the series of consultations we have been having. We believe we are gradually moving near a peaceful resolution of the issues.”
