As part of efforts of the Borno State Government to curtail violence in the state through investment in education, the government on Monday paid over N270 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) as fees for 33, 000 students writing the 2012/2013 examination.

Borno State Commissioner for Education, Malam Inuwa Kubo, who presented the cheques containing the amount to the two examination bodies in Maiduguri, the state capital, said the amount represented 75 per cent of the registration fees for the examinations.

“Today’s event marks another milestone in government’s efforts to develop the education sector in the State,” Kubo said.

“Government is paying to both WAEC and NECO to cover the registration fees of the estimated 33,000 students who registered for the examinations in the state. The amount covers 75 percent of the total registration fees as parents had already paid the 25 percent of the fees earlier.”

He said that the examinations had been conducted successfully in most parts of the state but lamented that some centres could not hold the examinations for security reasons.

While commending the two institutions for accepting to conduct fresh examinations for the affected students, the commissioner pleaded that they should ensure that all the students are able to access their results as soon the results are out so they could continue with their education with ease.
