For allegedly killing the son of a pastor, three police officers serving with the Borno Police Command have been dismissed.
The command, which made this known on Tuesday, said the killing of the pastor’s son took place at the Mobile Police Training School in the Liman-Kara area of the state.
Borno State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Lawal Tanko briefed journalists on the action of the command in Maiduguri, saying the Police authorities would no longer condone the impunity of its officers.
Tanko confirmed that the policemen had beaten the deceased to death for allegedly killing a dog belonging to one of them. He said they were found culpable of the act by an Orderly Room Trial and subsequently dismissed after, which they were handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for prosecution after full investigation. He however did not mention the names of the alleged killer policemen.
Tanko added that even though the bereaved pastor had written to say he had forgiven the policemen, Police authorities had a duty of ensuring justice was done.
“The three policemen have been dismissed from service following a recommendation by a trial panel,” he said.
“The case had been pending before I resumed in the state. I approved the dismissal after going through the file and the recommendations of the panel.
“A policeman should not be seen as taking laws into his hands. We believe that the dismissal will serve as deterrent to others who might want to do a similar thing. The case is a murder case between the Federal Government and the suspects and not between the complainant and the suspects.”
