The fact-finding committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on the health condition of Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai has affirmed that Alhaji Garba Umar should continue as Acting Governor of the state, as the governor would need more time to fully recuperate from injuries sustained in last year’s crash.
However, the committee noted that the acting governor must always take instructions from the recovering governor.
According to Chairman of the committee, Hope Uzodinma who addressed journalists after a two-hour closed-door meeting with all stakeholders including Suntai’s wife, Hauwa, the tussle over the leadership of Taraba State is strictly a PDP problem that should be resolved in-house peacefully.
Members of Uzodima’s committee arrived at the Jalingo Airport to the reception of Acting Governor Umar and several other leading officers of the state government, and then proceeded on a visit to Suntai’s official residence.
Taraba State has been engulfed in a crisis of governance since Suntai’s return, ostensibly to counter his deputy who is believed to be consolidating his hold on power.
Suntai then dissolved the executive and appointed a new Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), a move the deputy governor rejected, claiming that a cabal and not the governor was behind it.
While Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa and 15 other lawmakers are backing the deputy governor to continue in power until the governor is sufficiently fit to assume the business of governance, Majority Leader, Joseph Albasu and seven other legislators have already given Suntai the nod to resume work following his letter to the House on the matter.
