The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former Acting National Chairman, Kawu Baraje has been commended for stamping its feet against injustice in the party and insisting on a true and sincere PDP.
Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee made the commendation on Sunday while reacting to the development in a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
Kwanee expressed his excitement with the walkout staged by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, seven governors and many other leading figures of the party during the convention to convene a press conference at the Yar’Adua Centre to insist that the party is governed by its constitution.
According to Kwanee, who is also Chairman, Parliamentary Exchange and Mentorship Programme of the Pan African Parliament, this has confirmed his previous statements that the PDP in Rivers State and even in other states do not have recourse to the constitution of the party in their actions.
He accused the Felix Obuah-led PDP in the state of treating the party constitution as bread leaflet and described the so-called PDP national as a rubberstamp to all their illegal actions.
“I urge the true PDP to show that they are the authentic PDP by sticking to the party’s constitution, justice and fair play, as the Bamanga Tukur led-PDP has lost its relevance,” he said.
“I urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Baraje-led PDP as the true party, as the Tukur-led party flouted INEC’s directives that led to the resignation of most members of the National Working Committee (NWC) because the guidelines of the party and constitution which INEC hammered on was not obeyed.”
The deputy speaker also urged INEC to support the Baraje-led PDP, who will conform to INEC regulations. He said that there are many who are in Tukur faction of the PDP that would come back to the true PDP fold in no distant time.
Hon. Kwanee assured them of the support of the true PDP in Rivers State that has electoral support, and also congratulated them on the bold step aimed at “preventing the hijacking of the party by a cabal.”
