Policemen must learn to avoid the use of force and lethal weapons in manners that are contradictory to standing rules of engagement, Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar has warned.

Abubakar issued the warning on Friday in a circular addressed to all zonal assistant inspectors-general of police, command commissioners of police, and heads of department and formations across the country.

He warned that officers found culpable of violating the rules of use of weapons would be punished and implored police officers to respect and recognise the constitutional rights of citizens while performing their statutory duties. He reminded AIGs and CPs of the ban on road blocks and urged them to ensure strict enforcement.

Reiterating his commitment to reforming and returning the Police to the path of professionalism in line with international best practices and the transformation agenda of the Federal Government, he conveyed the determination of the Force to tackle all manners of corrupt practices.

He further enjoined them to abide by the Code of Conduct and Professional Standards for members of the Force, while also mandating the X-Squad — an internal Police Department that monitors enforcement of discipline — to improve on personnel monitoring in order to stamp out corruption in the Force.
