Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega has declared that against criticisms, the commission registered the All Progressives Congress (APC) because the party met the requirements for registration.

Jega, who stated this on Monday at a stakeholders’ conference with media professionals and civic groups concerning voter register optimisation, maintained that INEC has no regrets over the registration of the party.

“It was clear to the commission that the parties that intend to merge met all legal requirements and we have done all the processes required of us,” he said. “We believe we are right to do so under the law. We are satisfied that what we have done is within the law.”

Jega also used the opportunity to state that INEC discovered 93,526 cases of multiple registration of voters in Anambra, and then went on to vow that those involved in the electoral malpractice would be prosecuted.

INEC is currently facing a rival party, which is accusing the commission of being partisan, saying the registered APC uses the same acronym with it.  But Jega has now said the registered APC is qualified to participate in forthcoming elections, such as the one holding in Anambra on 16th November.
