The Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday confirmed with ease Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi, a nominee of the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola for the position of Finance Commissioner.

Until his appointment as a replacement for Adetokunbo Abiru, who resigned his appointment during the week, Gbeleyi was Special Adviser on Public Private Partnership to the Governor.

Tokunboh Abiru resigned his appointment as Commissioner for Finance to take up appointment as an Executive Director of First Bank of Nigeria, Plc and board member of the First Bank of Nigeria Holdings.

He joined the State Government from First Bank of Nigeria where he had served for over 20 years. But in a letter dated June 8 and presented to Governor Fashola during the State Executive Council meeting last Monday, he thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve the state. His appointment with First Bank takes effect from August 1, 2013.

Governor Fashola then wrote the House, urging members to confirm Gbeleyi, his nominee for the position, causing the House to convene a special sitting for Friday.

At the sitting, which lasted just about one hour, most of the members commended Gbeleyi for his efforts as Special Adviser on PPP. He was thereafter unanimously confirmed.

A Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Gbeleyi is an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School, the London Business School, Lagos Business School and an MBA holder from the International Graduate School of Management, University of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain.
