Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu on Monday urged Nigerians to exercise more interest in their health by placing premium on insuring it rather than insuring their cars.

Speaking in Umuahia while commissioning a state-of-the art Dialysis Centre built by the Abia State Government, Chukwu said: “Nigerians must give priority to their health by enrolling in the National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS.

“The scheme has developed a laudable programme that accommodates all categories of persons in our society. These include the Community-Based Health Insurance Programme (CBHIP), Voluntary Contributors Social Health Insurance Programme (VCSHIP) and Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Programme TISHIP.”

In addition, he urged Nigerians to take advantage of the services designed by the Scheme, saying the Community-Based Health Insurance Programme (CBHIP) is targeted at people in the informal sector of the economy, particularly those living in rural communities.

“NHIS is the only tool through which Nigerians can access qualitative healthcare services at an affordable and low cost,” he added, making a strong case for the effectiveness of the scheme.
