Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal has assured that assets seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would be properly managed.
According to Tambuwal, who was speaking at a three-day investigative hearing organised by the Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes to evaluate the status of assets seized and sold by the EFCC since its establishment, it is the responsibility of the House to ensure prudent management of assets seized and sold through forfeiture court orders.
At the hearing, Tambuwal urged fellow lawmakers not to allow the wasting away, for example, of more than 400 cars seized through the diligence of the EFCC.
“We have a vicarious responsibility to ensure that the assets seized through forfeiture, court orders are prudently and carefully manage,” he said. “This is to avoid waste and to ensure that the assets are maximally disposed of for the benefit of the public. We need to ensure that they are quickly utilised as part of the restitution for the original crime.”
Adams Jagaba (PDP-Kaduna), chairman of the Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes said the investigation was organised in the spirit of giving fair hearing for general public opinion.
