The Kebbi State Government says it has released a total of N122.9m for the payment of tuition and registration fees for 62 indigent students of the state origin studying in Indian and Sudanese universities.

This was disclosed on Saturday by Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, Murtala Yauri, in the state capital.

Yauri, who was discussing with newsmen, said 32 of the students are studying courses in Dentistry, Human Medicine and Pharmacy in Khartoum College of Medical Science and Ahfad University for Women, Oundurman, Sudan, He added that the sum of N11.62m was paid to these Sudanese universities as tuition fees and other charges.

Apart from this, the state also sponsors 30 students studying Medicine, Dentistry Science and Pharmacy at Bharati Vidyapeth University, India, while the state government recently approved additional foreign sponsorship of 100 students to pursue degrees in Computer Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences.

He disclosed that the state government has completed plans to sponsor 38 students to Egyptian universities to study Medicine, explaining that the state is similarly making serious efforts to improve its number of medical doctors and other professionals.

Yauri said the state government has so far sponsored 332 students to pursue medical courses in foreign universities, while 100 were offered sponsorships to study sciences in the North-West University, Kano.

According to him, the state “will adequately arrest the dearth of doctors and other professionals in our hospitals and the economic sector.
