President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) as the new Deputy Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
Lt-Gen Agwai, a former Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff, replaces Major-General Mamman Kontagora, who passed away last week.
According to a statement from Dr. Reuben Abati, presidential spokesman, the highly-decorated general who has also held several other military appointments within and outside the country, including Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone and Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Sudan, has been a member of the SURE-P Committee since its establishment by in February 2012.
The committee is charged with the responsibility of managing and reinvesting the Federal Government’s share of the savings from the partial removal of the subsidy on fuel in programmes and initiatives that will improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
