After failing in Friday’s bid to strip Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi of his chairmanship of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), pro-Jonathan governors have now turned their attention to ejecting the re-elected chairman from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
At three different meetings of the said governors over the weekend, the agenda were dominated by the best strategy to expel Amaechi for collaborating with the opposition to ridicule the Presidency and the party.
They equally resolved to shun the idea of instituting a court process against the election that returned Amaechi as NGF Chairman, and instead run a Jonah Jang-chaired parallel NGF while reinforcing the powers of the PDP Governors Forum.
They are reported to be favouring a political attack on Amaechi by prevailing on the PDP leadership to expel him from the party because the ruling party ought to produce NGF Chairman.
According to a source, the governors have not recovered from Amaechi’s shocking victory at the election and are surprised that some other governors did not reject the result when it was announced.
However, Amaechi’s supporter-governors are neither idle; and they are reported to be on a mission to compete with Governor Godswill Akpabio for the reins of the PDP Governors Forum. The first step in the plan is to demand a formal election to determine who chairs the PDP Governors Forum rather than Akpabio, who was allegedly foisted on the governors.
It is believed that no fewer than 13 out of the 23 PDP governors have met and agreed on the demand for an election.
A source close to the pro-Amaechi governors also revealed that the governors videoed a recording of Friday’s NGF election and will release it to the media should the need arise.
