Earlier reports today of the resolve of Washington to renege on its assistance to the Nigerian Military have been debunked by Deb MacLean, a spokesman for the United States Embassy in Nigeria.

Also debunking the claim was Professor Ade Adefuye, Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S. In his words, “McCulley  told me the report was a fabrication”.

There had been reports that the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Professor Terence McCulley held a closed-door meeting with leading Nigerian human rights groups, where he revealed the intention of America to abandon the Nigerian Military due to the alleged killing of civilians in Baga, Borno State.

Report  of issues of extra-legal killings by security agents and state of insecurity in the country were extensively discussed” at the meeting, which held at McCulley’s residence in Abuja. Also discussed was “the unprecedented corruption in Nigerian government circles.”

McCulley reportedly conveyed Washington’s unhappiness with the handling of the issues deliberated on and even made references to the human rights report on Nigeria released last week by the US State Department on gross rights human rights abuses in Nigeria. He then allegedly said military aid to Nigeria would be discontinued.
