The Federal House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Police Affairs and Human Rights to probe the alleged murder of a certain Mr. Chrisantus Okorie by a policeman in Mushin area of Lagos and report to the lower chamber within two weeks.

The resolution followed a motion by Hon. Raphael Igbokwe (PDP, Imo), which was eventually adopted after Speaker Aminu Tambuwal put it up for vote.

In the motion, titled Killing of Mr Chrisantus Okorie by the Nigeria Police, Igbokwe noted that a Police officer was reported to have killed Okorie, a native of Umuevu Village, Okirika-Nweke Autonomous Community of Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo, on Thursday 11th April.

Expressing concerns over the spate of Police extra judicial killings, he condemned the handling of previous incidents, saying they have always been inadequately reported. He warned that innocent and defenceless Nigerians will continue dying without prompt government action.

Hon Aminu Sulieman (PDP, Kano) and Karibi Nado (PDP, Bayelsa) supported Igbokwe’s observations and urged quick action to forestall recurrences. The motion was unopposed and the speaker referred it to the relevant committees for further action.

In a slightly related development, the lower chamber mandated its Committee on Agriculture to hold a public hearing on modalities for fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and herdsmen. This was after a motion by Rep. Ossai Ossai (PDP-Delta) was adopted, following a vote.

In the motion titled Brutal killing of 10 Indigenes of Ogume Community by some herdsmen in Delta State, Ossai condemned the 13th March killing of 10 indigenes by herdsmen in Ogume Community. The motion was referred to the Committee on Agriculture for further action.
