A jailbreak at Government Remand Home, Sapele, Delta State has resulted in the escape of 11 inmates, according to the Police, while an improvised explosive device (IED) was defused by officers of the law enforcement agency from a residential building.

According to reports, the inmates effected their escape by cutting the iron bars that were used to fence the remand home. So far, only two of the inmates have been rearrested.

Confirming the separate incidents in a release on Sunday, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Famous Ajieh revealed that the remand inmates successfully launched their escape at about 8.30 am on the particular day the incident happened.

“One Lucky Egbelughe, male, a senior staff of Sapele Remand Home, reported at Sapele Police Station that on the same date at about 0100 hours, 11 inmates escaped from the Remand Home by cutting the iron bars fence.

“However, on 18th March 2013, at about 1700 hours, two of the escapees, one Junior Akudo, male; and Green Glory, male, both aged 20 years were rearrested at Warri by policemen from ‘A’ Division Warri.”

He said the suspects were members of a notorious criminal gang terrorizing Warri and environs, and were remanded at Sapele Remand Home by a Magistrate Court in Warri before their escape.

Recalling how the bomb was defused, Mr. Ajieh said the incident happened on 19th March 2013 at about 9.00 am when a female resident at New World City, Ugbuwange, Warri reported at a police division, Warri that her son noticed an object suspected to be improvised explosive device (IED) planted by unknown persons in one of the rooms on the first floor of her four-storey building.

He said the Police immediately deployed men of the Anti-Bomb Squad from the Area Command and policemen from ‘A’ division, Warri to the scene.

After confirming that it was actually an IED, the team successfully defused it. He said the area, since then, had been placed under close surveillance for the protection of lives and properties and with a view to arresting the perpetrators.
