Worried by the recent attack on the convoy of Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday urged President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately initiate dialogue with the Boko Haram sect in order to find lasting solution to security challenges in the country.

The resolution was reached after a robust debate on a motion under matters of urgent public importance sponsored by Muhammad Bashir Galadanchi, representing Gwale federal constituency, Kano State.

Geladanchi, who expressed displeasure over the attack, commiserated with the Emir and the families of those killed, noting that the security and welfare of the people as stipulated in Section 14 (2) (b) of the Constitution is the primary purpose of government.

The lawmakers also observed that the Federal Government present approach of combating insecurity in the nation using military might, random arrests and imprisonment. They expressed concern that the approach is limited in effectiveness and has, in addition, escalated trends of insecurity, as they are only short-term solutions.

They argued that if the present approach is not reversed and more long-term solutions deployed, the incessant incidents will pose serious threats to the nation’s security, democracy, right and freedom of the citizens, and also destabilise the nation’s fragile stability and unity.
