Worried by the recent embarrassment of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur by members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) who reversed his decision on the sack of the Adamawa State Executive Council of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan has summoned the NWC members in an effort to resolve the crisis.
Jonathan’s invitation came on Wednesday, after it became clear that Tukur, whom he foisted on the party, is fast losing control of the party structure.
The problem in the party forced the NWC to convene a meeting of 10 members of the committee on Tuesday, excluding the national chairman due to his decision to sack the Adamawa State Executive Council.
Tukur, an indigene of the state in question, had maintained his stand on the dissolution of the state executive council since October 2012 even when Governor of the State, Murtala Nyako and other PDP chieftains in the state appealed to the NWC to reverse the decision.
The other 10 NWC members were said to have opposed Tukur’s decision. At the Tuesday meeting, they rejected his position and annulled the congresses conducted in the state by the caretaker committee, which was itself set up by the national leadership of the party.
They also reinstated the dissolved executive council and Tukur, who was pained by their decision, called it a betrayal of trust, coming from his colleagues.
The crisis further deepened on Wednesday as members failed to honour their regular meeting at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja. According to sources, the meeting could not hold because the 10 NWC members vowed to boycott anything that relating to Tukur.
It was learnt that at the meeting, the aggrieved members stated their complaint and President Jonathan appealed to them to bury their hatchet and instead concentrate on moving the party to a level higher than they met it.
Confirming that the issue had been resolved, Tukur later told journalists that the members had resolved to put the matter behind them and that he has confidence in other members because they are the first families of the party
