An early-evening fire has razed the biggest plank market in Lagos State, resulting to the loss of goods worth several millions of naira. As at the time of this report, about 100 shops and sawmills located at the Ebute-Metta end of the state had already been destroyed in an incident, which source is yet to be known.
Balls of fire and thick smoke coming from the scene could be seen from major parts of the state while men of the Lagos State Fire Service were making efforts to put out the fire.
According to sources at the scene who spoke with Huhuonline.com, the fire started from one of the shops and immediately began to spread despite the efforts of residents of the area and businessmen to extinguish it.
“We don’t know what really caused the fire, but we suspect an electrical fault,” the source said,” one said. “It took Fire Service officials several minutes to get to the scene. And even when they finally got here, the fire was too much for them to handle.”
He added, though, that the firefighters did their best but shop owners could only watch helplessly as their business centers were razed.
