Twenty prisoners escaped from the prison located in Sagamu, Ogun State on Wednesday, Comptroller General of Nigeria Prisons Services, Zakari Ibrahim has said.

According to Ibrahim, who disclosed this on Friday during his visit to the affected prison, the “unfortunate and embarrassing” incident would be thoroughly investigated.

The Ogun State Prison Command had refused to make any definitive statement on the prison break, during which prisoners broke the fence and injured some prison officers.

But while speaking about it, the comptroller-general warned that any staff found culpable in the incident during investigation would be dismissed.

“I have addressed the staff and I have told them that their commitment must be full and total; those who want to embarrass us should just leave,” he said.

“If investigations into the matter reveal that the incident was as a result of negligence of some of our staff, they will be dismissed and punished accordingly.”

Ibrahim, who said he was personally in Sagamu to assess the situation and to ensure that the officers of the service re-dedicate their efforts, said: “my visit is also to ensure that any staff found culpable face the full wrath of the law.

“We have set up a committee that will give us full report of what happened, and what I can tell for now is that we have 20 inmates who escaped and we have re-arrested four of them.”

Ibrahim added that some of the staff would be prosecuted.
