An early-morning fire on Saturday razed a part of Radio Nigeria Positive FM in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, causing serious hitch in the transmission of programmes.

According to some staff of the radio station who confirmed the incident to Huhuonline.com, the fire incident resulted in the destruction of equipment worth millions of naira.

The sources said although the immediate cause of the fire was still being investigated, it actually began from the transmitter room, at about 6:40 am, after which it began to spread.

A staff of the organization, who spoke on condition of anonymity, believed it must have been caused by a power surge. “It was actually discovered by an engineer on duty,” he said.

Before men of the state Fire Service arrived at the scene, the fire, which mainly affected the engineering changeover room, had been put out by the combined effort of the staff on duty and staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), which is situated just close to the radio station.

In his reaction to the incident, General Manager of the station, Reverend Olusegun Ayankoso, thanked those who assisted in putting the fire out.

The station is currently off the airwaves but a staff of the organisation assured that transmission of programmes would resume in earnest because the management of the organisation is on top of the situation
