Irate youths protesting the death of two of their kinsmen on Thursday in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, pelted Acting Governor Dameshi Barau Luka with stones, damaging two vehicles in his convoy.
The angry youths from Nunku chiefdom in Akwanga Local Government Area of the State picked on the acting governor while he was on his way to console families of deceased.
The two men, described as “an elderly man and middle aged man,” lost their lives in a motor accident during a journey to pay Christmas visit to the acting governor. They were on top of their motorbikes when they were suddenly knocked down by a vehicle few kilometres to the Dameshis’s house in Akwanga. One of them died on the spot while the other died on the way to the hospital.
At the time of accident, the acting governor was attending a meeting with commissioners, permanent secretaries and some special advisers in his residence when the news filtered in.
After the meeting, the acting governor decided, along with his conveyor, to move to the chiefdom to commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives.
Eyewitnesses said the convoy ran into the angry youths on their way; and they pelted the vehicles with stones and sticks. It was not certain why the anger was directed at the acting governor.
