A robbery incident that could have led to deaths, injuries and loss of valuable properties to several hundred commuters was scuppered on Friday morning when security operatives attached to the convoy of Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi overwhelmed an armed gang operating along Enugu-Awka Expressway, rescuing more than 500 stranded commuters in the process.
Confirming the development, Olayinka Oyebode, the chief press secretary to the Ekiti State governor disclosed that the robbers had laid siege to the route, five kilometers away from Aniocha village, and were already dispossessing many motorists of their belongings.
“This led to the abandonment of scores of vehicles along the road before the convoy arrived at the spot around 10.20am to dislodge the robbery gang, following a superior fire exchange,” he told Huhuonline.com. “After dislodging the gang, the convoy then led all the stranded commuters and motorists out of the area.”
Daylight robberies are common occurrences on the nation’s highways, particularly the pothole-ridden stretches along the most patronized routes, such as the Lagos-OIbadan Expressway.
