Managing Director of Nigerian Compass Newspaper, Sina Kawonise and a security detail attached to him were on Tuesday shot by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in Osun state.Mr. Kawonnise who was on his way from Anambra state, where he was the keynote speaker at the 17th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Association held at the Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka, sustained injuries on his leg from the gunshots.
He was allegedly attacked by the gunmen around Ikeji-Arakeji in Osun state and according to a dependable source in the Compass Newspaper; he is currently receiving treatment with the security detail in a hospital in Osun state.
The source said the gunmen tried to stop his vehicle but Kawonise made an attempt to evade them and in anger they opened fire on his vehicle.
It was however learnt that the armed men later fled when they were almost overpowered by the two security details. This was after they had injured him and one of the police officers.
The source at the media outfit said: “most of us got the information this evening when we got to the office. In fact, we thank God that no life was lost in the attack.
“We have been able to reach our boss and he is in good condition. He’s responding well to treatment with the security man attached to him and some of my superiors are making moves to go see him in Osun state.”
